Starting
Nursery :
It is important
for parents and staff to work together to help the child
feel confident and secure in the nursery. This takes
longer for some children than others and parents should
not be alarmed if their child takes a while to settle.
To help ease the child into nursery, we do encourage
parents to visit the nursery with their child during the
week admission is planned. We then encourage the
parents, where appropriate, to separate from their child
for a brief period at first, gradually building up to
longer absences. The staff will of course, give the
child as many cuddles and as much attention as they
need.
Ideas to help
your child settle
All children are
different, some children adapt to nursery with ease and
others find it takes longer to adjust. Here are some
guidelines for helping your child to settle.
• Encourage your
child to look forward to coming to nursery. Talk about
the exciting things they will be doing and making for
you.
• A special toy
can be brought to help with settling (please label with
name)
• Come into the
nursery and find an activity you feel your child will
enjoy. A member of staff will help your child to feel
secure.
• We aim for you
to leave your child for a short period of time with us
(this time can be built up gradually).
• Explain to your
child that you are going; reassure him/her that they
will have a lovely time and that you will be back very
soon. Say goodbye and leave quickly. • Your child may be
upset that you are leaving, please be reassured that
children rarely cry for long. You are welcomed to ring
and enquire about how they are doing.
What to wear
In order to feel
free to explore and experiment with all kinds of
materials, including messy ones, it is best to dress
children in clothing which is easily washed and not
their best outfits. We do supply aprons for water play
and painting, although accidents do happen.
Parents need to
make available a spare set of clothes which can be kept
on nursery premises at all times. Simple clothing which
they can handle themselves improves independence at the
toilet etc. We provide a Ladybird clothing bag for all
children. Nappies and wipes are to be provided by
parents.
Picking up of
your child
Staff should be
advised in writing of a person other than the authorised
parent/guardian picking up your child. We operate on a
password system in order to ensure that staff members
are releasing the child to the authorised person.
Parents are advised to change passwords when allowing
different people to collect your child. Where written
notice is not possible, a telephonic conversation with
the parent/guardian is necessary. We will not let your
child leave the setting without the permission of the
parent/guardian.
